    Experiences with Largish Caliber Hammers

Not a bad call and I would have a heck of a time choosing if there were more options. I’d also like a 338 RCM. However, I can’t pass on a CVA scout at like $400. Basically makes the decision for me if I were going to upgrade to a larger bore rifle.

    Experiences with Largish Caliber Hammers

That's the appeal of the whelen. larger bore with extreme efficiency. I'm thinking the 200 PH would be great for deer and the 223 SH for elk. Maybe an HHT or two comes out in this caliber by the time I’m thinking of getting into the whelen.

    Experiences with Largish Caliber Hammers

Hi there. I’m curious about people’s experience with 33/35/37 cal hammers compared to their smaller brethren. I’m thinking of a 35 whelen as a large caliber cartridge that can throw bullets with reasonable velocities without a huge amount of recoil. For roughly the same amount of recoil, how...

    CVA Scouts

Thanks for the info. I was suspicious about the barrel length claim. Their catalog has the weight listed as 8.8 pounds, so they’re chunks. I was thinking you could get away without the brake since the whelen has manageable recoil and I know CVAs to handle magnum charges in their MZs pretty well...

    Hammer .35 Whelen data

Gordon’s Reloading Tool has around 2870 and just under 63k at 59.6 gr with a 25” barrel. In my limited experience with shooting GRT loads hammers run 60-100 fps faster than predicted and charges to be a little too high on predicted pressure with LVR. Neither are popular enough to have strong...

    Hammer .35 Whelen data

If you see any on the shelf, I’d give Leverevolution powder a try. Should be able to get over 3100 with the 200gr. It’s good stuff.

Tikka 280ai build. Help choose a barrel

If you’re willing to change cartridges, a 284 win would be another good option for a new barrel. They’re within 100 fps in the same length barrel. There are several prefits that offer match chambers that are throated for the 180 class bergers. Same bolt face, you’ll have plenty of room to seat...

Rounding out the line of 7mm HHT's

Given the popularity of the 30 cal 124 HH, I would think an offering in that weight class would tickle all the laser beam enthusiasts that seem to be in the forum.

    Best 7mm-08 powders?

Give LVR a try. People seeing 3050-3080 with a 150 bulldozer 2 in 24” barrel in 308 before pressure signs. Others reported about 3050 in a 20” but I’m guessing they were either over pressure without signs or missing signs. It seems to be about 50-100 fps faster than CFE with similar charge...

    138HHT/308 winchester help

That’s rather short. I load the 137 to 2.8275 and that’s a shorter bullet than the HHT. No crimp. 47.4gr Varget. Didn’t have pressure until 48.8. TAC gives more speed and still acceptable accuracy, but not bug hole groups. Load them long and see how it goes.

    New Axis in 30-06.

You can buy the lighter target accutrigger spring aftermarket. I ordered 2 earlier today for like $22 after shipping and handling. I don't mind the one on my axis, but the one on my mark II fv-sr is too heavy and has some creep and it feels like it puts a little torque into the rifle when...

    Predator Proliferation Problems

    1) It looks like Lynxgate is a bit of fake news. https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/debunking-lynxgate/ My reading is that they sent control samples from Lynx and bobcat because they didn't trust the lab doing the ID work. If anything, they were trying to reduce the likelihood of a...

    New Axis in 30-06.

Might as well get the mcarbo stock stiffening blocks too if it’s the old version of the stock. My axis II in 308 win shoots well with Varget. It shoots the 137 better than the 124. What did you use to sand out the barrel channel? I’m planning to open mine up a little and rockite the forend to...

    Predator Proliferation Problems

Without a doubt. There are verified sightings all over the state. I know of one in Norman. That doesn’t mean there are many hundreds of them in the state, which if you what some people will try to claim based on anecdotal, often unverified reports. Outside of Cimarron County and the NE Ozarks...
