James and his PH (Professional Hunter) were able to get within 50 yards of a group of Cape Buffalo resting next to a termite mound. The PH selected which bull to shoot. James lined up his 577 Nitro Express on traditional African shooting sticks. The bull was mostly broadside when it stood up. James sent the 650gr Claw Hammer right behind the shoulder.
James said, “He immediately went down and simultaneously bellow. The PH said later that he had never seen a big bull go down like that in his 9 years of being a PH! Of course, the other bulls got up at that point and the PH turned his attention to them because they often attend one of their group that has fallen, but in this case, they ran off.” James bull was attempting to stand up so he sent the second 650 Claw Hammer.

James full field report, “You can see from the photos that the entrance wounds cut a nice 577 diameter plug out. Because of the way the bull is laying in the picture the shots appear higher than they actually were. The first shot into the chest cavity exited with a slightly smaller hole. The second shot was back as the bull was thrashing and I just shot him offhand with the left bore. It made a 3-prong mark on the skin and we thought it might have exited, but found it at the skinning shed just under the skin.

The bullet lost a little just of the lip of the cup on the meplat. It had traveled through the middle of the buffalo's pouch which had more than a wheelbarrow full of the tough wet grass - at least 30" plus the thick hide. The buffalo died so fast there was very little blood
.”
Congratulations James and thank you for sharing your hunt and details.

Gday Les & Carl
You wait till the next generation of solids come out
These will be better again than what you see in that 577

I might as well eat crow again here as I stated previously & numerous times I didn’t worry to much about the solid world anymore & basically it’s not worth my time ( I needed to prioritise what I can work on within weaknesses so I can get better pills in my arsenal so yes greedy also ) & overall true solids of today have very very few minuscule weaknesses so I was happy to not delve that deep

Ha guess what I’m discussing with the hammer boys along with a couple of brainy guys

Yes I’m after a solid 😱🤣
But it’s not the solids of today as they still have one weakness & that’s brush while they are still good I do believe they can be improved on & this once again involves pistols & arrows basics

We have so much to learn from those systems & if it comes off now we will have a better brush solid than we do today & potentially even slightly better standard solids

I always say things happen for reasons & when I did my back in , then blew my knee out ( hyperextended) I was forced to lay up & do nothing so went back through old notes on solids as trying to work out the best combo for Alex & i for a future elephant hunt 🤞
Hmm there was one little piece that concerned me & that was brush deflections

Chatted to kneedeep on my old albums containing pictures of brush / objects that had been impacted over the years & the ticking began & went all the way back to 1997 diary to where I found what I needed to start the ticking even more & then went to my old reloading room in m&d shed that I found some of those pills in a old box
Hmmm yep I now have what I needed to start measuring & hopefully can get a better brush bullet
Now a fair bit of testing is going to have to confirm this theory but it maybe of use to a limited few of you guys but overall I may be barking up the wrong tree so just watch this space as it may come or just disappear 🤷‍♂️

Cheers
