358 Win 200 HH

Can’t get factory “hot” 225 gr load to shoot well out of my 20” Browning BLR (12” twist), so bought some 200 gr HH to hand load.

Range day with H4198 using Hornady brass, Federal GM210M primers, COAL 2.808", Lee FCD light crimp:

Grains - MV
40.0 - 2443
40.5 - 2489
41.0 - 2497
41.5 - 2537
42.0 - 2544
42.5 - 2573
43.0 - 2600
43.5 - 2616
44.0 - 2650
44.5 - 2660

No pressure signs. I think I should retest with magnum primers.

Although MV = 2650 fps makes this a 400 yd capable hunting rig. So I might just load up a bunch at 44.2 gr and check accuracy.

I think I'm right at 99% case fill given my COAL of 2.808" with 44.2 grains (don't hear any crunching; fill looks to be close to my Mk.1 eyeball bullet base location.

2.810" is just about max for my magazine length with reliable feeding. Haven't measured how far from lands this is.

Back to the range for 100 yd testing at 44.2 gr H4198:

1. 2672 fps
2. 2651
3. 2658
4. 2667
5. 2650

Avg MV = 2660
ES = 22
SD = 9.9

Shot 4 thrown a little high. Overall 5 shot 1.2 MOA. First 3 shots all touching.

Good enough for hunting I reckon...

 
I just received my 140 shock hammers in the mail Sunday. I'm also waiting on a Barrel from McGowan to show up so I can play with the 358 also!

I'm not sure what velocity you were expecting because I have no experience with this caliber. But I think you're on to something and the accuracy looks like it's going to be there for you also once you settle on your load.

Buffalo Bore “supercharged” ammo with 225 gr pills is roughly 2500 fps…I’m happy with 150 fps over that with 200 HH.

I recently found some Tac, but H4198 is faster and I’m not sure I can improve upon it.

I see that Hornady actually lists data for 200 gr bullet with RL-7.

I think I'll get some and give it a try.

Nice work with the .358 Win and 200 gr HH. I gather that group was shot with the load you referenced (didn't switch to magnum primers as you thought you might).

What 225 gr bullets are loaded in the Buffalo Bore ammo?

Looking forward to letting some 200 Power Hammers loose from my 35 Whelen AI. I have a string loaded up, need to get out and shoot.

That 5 shot group was with standard primers…haven’t tried the magnum primers yet.

BB 225 gr Supercharged uses Sierra Gameking bullets.

I’ve used this handle on several forums. Been here a few years…took a hiatus as I moved a few rifles I was shooting hammers out of my safe to new homes, and it took nearly a year to get my WSM back from stock maker’s.
