Finishes

What’s your go to finish for bbl, action, bolt etc?

I believe my smith used “duracote” don’t quote me on that. But rust has come too from its slumber and started eating off that finish.

This common with any finish or does cerakote work better/differently to protect metal surfaces?

What’s the best way to proceed with getting the rust turned around?

Mainly it’s my bolt, would soaking it in evaporust be safe?

Thanks

Became partial to cerakote ( air and heat cure). I live a couple of miles from Lauer, never could get myself to try Duracote on a firearm. Other stuff it's a quick grab.

Cerakote seems to protect very well, and the heat cure is amazingly durable. I did up a bunch of 20rd mags in air cure and have yet to have any show wear yet.

As far as the rust, not overly sure without knowing for sure what the coating is. Whatever you use could make the coating lift worse.

I really don’t care if the rest of the finish comes off, it’s not doing it’s job anyhow.

That said, would it be safe to soak bolt in acetone? Then in a rust eliminator? (I say evaporust because it’s supposed to be safe and non toxic). And then have it cerakoted?
