Finally got around start load work in a 6.5-284 I built a while back-
Tikka 24” CarbonSix 1:7
Peterson once fired
CCI200
109 OAL 2.940. About .75 for the whole string
123 OAL 3.070. Was about the same .75 for the string, last 2 opened it up to about 1.25.

54.53426Light BL
553462Same
55.53467Same

Never got more than a little stiffer bolt than normal. All made about .75moa.

52.53249
533247
53.53281Light BL
543319BL
54.53333Heavy BL

These were about the same, other than the last two opened up a bit. I think that’s the only data I have that hasn’t been posted at LRH previously.

RIFLE: Browning X-Bolt
BULLET: 122gr HHT
POWDER: Alliant RL-16
PRIMER: Federal 215 match
BRASS Norma
COAL: 2.860"
BARREL LENGTH: 23"
TWIST: 10
START CHARGE: 60.0 Grains 3317 FPS
FINISH CHARGE: xxx
CRIMP: Lee Factory. Pretty tight to get crimp into the bullet groove.

had great plans to run load ladder. Had charges from 60.0gr to 64.8gr in 1% increments. Had 4 loaded at 60.0gr to zero and for cleaning shots....new scope and the barrel was thoughly cleaned after the fire forming and barrel break in 100 count.

All 4 of the 60.0gr casings showed .0005" to .001" head growth and a slight ejector circle. No stiff bolt, but I didn't try the 60.6gr round.....call me chicken.

To me, RL-16 seems to be a bit too fast burn for the 122gr HHT. Probably in the wheelhouse for the 116gr AH.
Ok, I am dumb.

It's no wonder the above load showed signs of pressure right out of the gate....I double checked my work just now (now that hunting season is over, I can get this rifle back out of the safe). Turns out, using the Sinclair Bullet Seating Depth tool, I arrived at a max COAL of 2.836". This should be the measurement where the bullet is touching the rifling.

Going back and checking my load data quoted above, I had set the COAL to 2.860" for no other reason than to get 2 high points inside the case neck and have my crimp land nicely in the valley of the bullet.

Wrong!

I failed to notice that my 2.860" load was jamming 0.024"! No wonder pressure spiked at an entry level load. I was really bewildered that day at the range, but I resisted shooting the next 1% heavier load....and I'm glad I did. What caused the early pressure is pretty obvious to me now.

So, can someone please annotate on the published HHT data that the COAL I listed above should be very carefully checked before mirroring that load?

From here, I'm going to retest with RL16 using a COAL of 2.810" to give it 0.026" jump to the rifling. More to come, but I think this is a good illustration why we start low and work our way up carefully while watching for pressure.

2.810" COAL, 0.026" jump to rifling

61.5 3373 average 3 shot group, 0.4"
62.1 3398
62.7 vel error, ejector mark, head grew 0.001"

I think there is more speed to be had from this rifle/bullet combo.....if I could find RL-26 :-(
Quickload predicts 61.5gr, 124gr HH length set to 1.295" and weight set to 122gr, 23" barrel the velocity shows 3307....so not that far off. Where I found pressure at 62.7gr, QL shows it at 63,890 psi, or 73 psi over max. QL is just a rough guide.....
