Hey guys, first time posting here. I bought some 140 gr Absolute Hammers a while back am just now getting a chance to shoot some. Initial load work up is with Staball 6.5. I'm shooting a Seekins Precision PH2 with a 26" 1:8 Twist. Velocities are as follows:
60 gr-2920
61gr-3005
62 gr-3093
63 gr-3204
64 gr-3247
65 gr-3238
COAL-3.400"
Temp: 68°
Pressure: 28.45 inHg
Humidity: 85%

No pressure signs so far on any brass or primers. I have 6 more loads already ready to go testing from 65 gr to 70 gr in 1 gr increments. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with these 140 gr bullets on game? Are these bullets suitable for Elk?

Quick edit: Brass used is new Sig

Guys have taken elk with the 117hh in .277.

140ah Should be a fine elk bullet in the right conditions.
I.e, not too far, not too windy, not too excited to place an ethical shot in the vitals.

I also have some WLRs I might try later. I think I read that some times you get better velocities with a non-magnum primer with the Absolute Hammers. Is this correct?

Should I pull the loads I have now and restart with non-magnum primers? Or is it not going to make that big of a difference?

I wouldn't, just not that much difference initially. Although I have a few magnum cartridges I use standard primers in I also have several smaller cartridges that prefer magnums. Best thing to do is let the rifle tell you what it likes. If you want, load a few more with standard primers so you can compare.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

Regards

Nice write up and Welcome from Wolverine state!

I'll add I'm using the 140gn AH in my 280ai 8 twist at 3200fps for elk. Im fairly new to hunting with Hammers and not the most successful hunter these days so I haven't taken an elk with it yet but regardless Ive tipped over several elk with a quarterbore so I have zero concerns of dropping an elk with the 140gn AH.

agorman - just a little bit to ponder over. I have an 8.5 twist 7 RM 24” and with the 143 HH and R26, am getting 3,460 fps.

I have been messing with the 140 absolutes in my 7RM 1:9 25" barrel. I settled on 62.5 grains N160, CCI 250 around 3250FPS. Another load that is close second is 69 grains H4831sc, CCI250, around 3350 FPS.
