270 WSM vs 300 WSM vs .243 Win

Bertram had 270wsm brass a while back. Price is high and consistency (weights and measurements) within the batch was not great.

Even found some Norma floating around a few months back thanks to a tip from a member here.
Browning X-Bolt Speed in 270 WSM (Item Number 035558248) weighs in at 6 1/2 pounds....and comes with a factory muzzle brake to help with recoil for the kids. Bertram Brass has 270 WSM in stock. Pair it with Hammer's 122gr HHT.

Assuming 24 ounces for scope and mounting, you are looking at 8 pounds for the setup. Let's take a look at recoil using JBM's recoil calculator using 8lb rifle as the baseline:

270 WSM using 122gr going 3400 fps: 20.6 lbs of recoil
6.5 CM using 85gr going 3500 fps: 10.7 lbs of recoil

IMHO....give those kids a light recoiling rifle to make it a pleasant experience out of the gate. Move them up to the 270 WSM when they are older and an elk hunt is on the calendar.

Just my $0.02.....

Kris - I am really enjoying the 300 WSM. With a brake it doesn't kick much at all. I'm just going to talk out loud. When my son was 12 I bought matching 308 Winchesters for us to hunt together with. It was a lot of fun! I'd take a 308 over a 7mm/08. For the kids, I would load up the 138fHHT or the 137HH for deer and even for elk. I'd stay away from the 243 for deer at the ranges you are talking about. I can't believe nobody else has mentioned the 308. It is a great round.
What’s wrong with 243 for deer at 3-400yds?

We have had success with the 70g hh on blacktails at 300 and 355yds. (By success I mean the bullet did what it was supposed to, blow the nose and keep on truckin into the hillside beyond the buck. Even one with poor shot placement through paunch and out off hq.)

It’s in the description on the product page for the 70hh… “tested on whitetails to 300yds with excellent results” or something similar, straight from Steve’s mouth.

Op, I wouldn’t hesitate to use it for your purpose.
Guys have reported taking kudu with the same 70hh.

A good resource for this topic was posted by oe.

Click the link, then find your caliber or bullet weight and see what different animals have been taken. Look at the details about the shot and animal’s reaction too.

Hope this is helpful in some way.

243 is great for deer but the OP suggested the possibility of elk hunting in the future.

Wonder what the 243 kicks at 3600fps?
Or the 270wsm with a 90-110g? 36-3800fps?

70gr @ 3600 fps = 8.9lbs
90gr @ 3800 fps = 16.6lbs

tuning that .277 90gr down to 3400 fps gives it 14.8 lbs. Add in the muzzle brake effect and that gets reasonable.

124HHs at 3750+ is magic out of a 300 WSM.💥🚀🔨☠️

I get 3800+ out of my 300 H&H with the 124s and with a Kirby Allen muzzle brake you can hand it to somebody's seven-year-old niece and she could shoot it. Velocity and frontal diameter rule the game.

And please, lets leave the 7 08s for the man buns mom🤣🤣

I like @choprzrul suggestion for an off the shelf 270wsm with low recoil. I have the speed LR for my rum and the factory radial is unbelievable even with the 168HHT @ 3500+. The LR is like 6oz. heavier than the plain speed.

Since you are looking at a tikka (don't own one YET) there won't be much difference in recoil between the 270wsm w/ 122hht or the 300wsm and the 124hh. If both have 1:10 twist, I'd go with the 300wsm. Can run a light 124hh load for deer now, then bump up almost as far as you want for elk when they are older.

You can hunt elk in Idaho with a .17 Bee if you want too! I wouldn't recommend it. I've shot one - no kick!
I think Montanas the same way. Some states have overly restrictive weapon restrictions but i cant say Id agree with "any" centerfire caliber either...

Knew a guy who grew up hunting elk in Montana with a 22-250. Swore by it. Alaska hunting legend Frank Glaser was famous for hunting everything up there with a 220 Swift including moose and grizz..

Far as I know Manitoba is currently any centrefire, Saskatchewan is centrefire with a case length requirement of 32mm and no .17 or smaller, .22 hornet, 25-20 and numerous others are specifically mentioned as nono’s

I don’t have much firsthand experience with the 70gr HH in a 243 but what I have seen is impressive, I tend to believe that elk/kudu would lay down and die right quick if you make a good shot. I’m talking chest shots not head/neck.

Thanks for the thoughts on the various cartridges.
We have a Sako 308 win that's the gun that we have that everyone can shoot. My others are all wild cat super magnums that my oldest daughter actually shoots. She's just not real good at carrying it around.

We aren't interested in the Needmore. I've always been interested in the 270 wsm so this is a good excuse to try one. Especially since hammer has such a good selection of bullets for them. I'm pretty sure the twist is 9.5 on the T3x I looked at. Not that it will be an issue with the small bullets that I would load for the kids.
I've had an itch for a 300 wsm so if I get one for momma then you know I might as well get a matching one. She always wants to buy us matching things so this should be easy sell to her.😜
As for muzzle brakes I'm pretty happy with the Ti pro. They work great and are lighter than a radial in SS

R-17 in the past for my 300WSM; arguably produces among the fastest velocities. However, it's horribly temperature sensitive, so I've recently obtained some R-16 that is almost as fast, and supposedly very insensitive to temp. 3315fps with the 154HHT.
