270 Win Hand Load Development 117gr Hammer Hunter

This is good advice.
Howdy All,
I’m still on the steep portion of the learning curve, but with the FC brass that @riceman provided, neck tension .001 to .002, I’m now getting someplace with my 117hh loads. No pressure symptoms observed (and no separation of cases, thankfully). Decided to listen to @ButterBean and went with a bigger jump (.080) with the case edge crimp in the top groove. I got impatient and skipped to 1/4T on this series. (Partially because when I pulled pills from the bad brass, I noticed a significantly lower force required to pull the HH vs TTSX). I saw larger ES in the lower powder groups 54 to 56.5 gr (these pills were pulled from the bad brass and reloaded, not sure if that impacted ES).

Highest 2 powder loads had 3333fps with 58.0 gr and 3358 fps on top of 58.5 gr, both grouped ok and single digit ES. I’m impressed with the velocity out of a 22” barrel! I’m still seeing velocities increase and thinking I will load a few more steps on this ladder, with a reset to brass I’m sizing and reg primers. Planning on resizing this brass with a careful .001 bump target and same neck od, and will run non mag primers, sticking with same seat depth and FCD.IMG_4010.jpeg

Summary of results from range on July 30. * denotes bullets that had been pulled and reloaded in fresh brass. Looking at trends, seems like I might be able to get a bit more velocity before I hit pressure, will add a few small steps to my ladder. Will also repeat the 117H 58gr load as that one looks pretty awesome already.

Summary of results from 7-28 and 7-30, some more spread in results with the 117HH loads on 7-28 due to case head separation, but adds some
more color to the ladder trends.

Regarding crimp, I always jump straight to a 1/4T on the die and only mess with it if it’s not shooting quite as well as I want, which rarely happens as I’m not a bughole shooter. If I do adjust crimp from there I start by adding crimp up to 1/2, never had to explore under 1/4 yet but I also don’t load or shoot as much as most of the guys here.

Switched to large rifle primers. CCI200. Saw minimally higher velocity at the upper end, comparable or slightly worse ES, but better groups on paper for 117HH.

Extended my ladders and hit pressure, saw intermittent powder soot around the primers on upper loads, (thanks again to @riceman for sage consultation on pressure signs, I'll get learned eventually). Minor crater ridges at pressure.

This rifle seems to like 124HH. Or maybe I just shot better groups with all the extra practice. Seems like 57 grains H4350 is a sweet spot for both payloads. 122HHTs have arrived and will work up some loads for that next.

Next steps for me, get rifle back from smith with installed painkiller brake, probably early next week. Finding I am doing a lot more shooting now that I'm handloading, which is a neat thing, but makes a brake more desirable. In the meantime, I am loading repeatability 117HH and 124HH at 57 grains, and also will try a few higher FCD settings than 1/4T. Loading a ladder of H4350 and RL 16 with the 122HHT, hoping to hunt with that pill.

Nice work on the 270. I can see you really liking that with the new painkiller break.👍

💥🚀🔨☠️
Thanks! Have a pk on my 7RM and it makes it a much more comfortable shooting half a day session for me at least. 🤜🤛

Precision,
Any way I can get you to type your data? Can't follow all of it?
(About like trying to read Farleg's scratchings🤪)

I'm not sure if you're saying my chicken scratchings aren't readable??? If that’s what you’re saying then that makes at least 2 of us.:oops::LOL::LOL::LOL:

Pasted in a table, is that what you were wanting to see?

I’d give Peterson a call and see when they plan to a run some up.
Thanks for suggestion. I got signed up for updates from Graf on 270 Peterson brass, reached out to Peterson also, haven't heard back.

Graf had 7mm Rem Mag in stock so I bought 150 cases, arrived yesterday. Gosh it's pretty brass. 🤩 Will keep an eye out for 270 brass from Graf and stock up when it becomes available.

Not in stock yet but like the 300WM long, really nice for first firing minimal stretch.
