Glock 20 bear pistol!

Unsure what to make of the man. I saw him on a podcast speaking about a bison hunt. .300WSM if I recall. Total rodeo that just didn't have to be that bad. Either honest or doesn't let much get in the way of a good story.

His (my) point was rifles or handguns don't come with competence in the box.

It's kind of wearing off, but having slept with a "Fanner 50" most of my formative years, I could probably still manage my Ruger Blackhawk .44 Special if needed.

Disclaimer partner shot a bayed up smaller bear with a .44 Magnum, 300 grain bullet, and got run over for his troubles. Dogs kept him from having cool scars to go with the story. Just dirt on his backside. Bear didn't go far, but far enough I suppose.

I'm not sure semi auto, double action with Jerry Miculek was getting more than one chance.

I put a bunch of rounds through a 1911, never could hit with it. Embarrassingly it worked top notch for friends.

On the other hand, I had a Browning HP I didn't seem to miss with. Sights and grips just fit.

If I have my rifle as well a handgun, I could be happy with G-17.
A G-20 10 mm is about the same power as a 357-Mag. last, I checked.
Don't forget your bear-spray.

It's a last ditch effort to stay on the planet. I should think if you are shooting at a bear with a handgun, you are in a real crap sandwich because you are the sandwich. I would go Glock 20 tho.

Everytime there is a 10mm for bear defense I always share this story.
Im not knocking it, its what I carry its a great woods round, but Im not sweeping under the rug that if you have to shoot a bear in defense with any pistol your probably going to have a physical fight on your hands too.

I'm sure the Jack Hammer bullets would be a good load for bear defense, but I don't load much pistol so have always carried Buffalo Bore loads in bear country. Here's a story from their website about a guide in Alaska that ended up killing a grizzly with a 9mm. I'm not advocating carrying that, but it's a testament to the merits of having penetrating ammo for that rather than personal defense rounds, so I thought it might be of interest to the Hammer fans.

Tim,

Two days ago I was guiding a couple from NY on a fishing trip and decided to pack my S&W 3954 pistol. When we were approaching the stream we bumped into a large boar who must have been sleeping as we were talking loud just so we wouldn't surprise one. Over the past 33 years I have lived and guided here on the Alaska peninsula I have never had to kill a bear in defense of life but this bear was different.

We were in thick brush and I was only 8 or 10 feet from the bear when he started growling and huffing. I began yelling and it eventually ran around, behind my two clients, into the brush. But within 15 seconds it came charging back from the area behind us and popped out of the brush 10 feet from me! I had the little S&W in my hands and was thinking I was probably going to have to shoot it but as it cleared the brush it headed toward my clients. The man had enough sense to grab his wife and fall backward into the tall grass. The bear seemed to lose track of them, even though it was less than 3 feet away from them and it was highly agitated! It then swung toward me, I was 6 or 8 feet away, and I fired the first shot into the area between the head and shoulder. It growled and started wildly thrashing around, still basically on the feet of my clients. My next shot hit it in the shoulder and it began twisting and biting at the hits and I continued firing as fast as I could see vitals. Five shots later it turned into the brush and I hit it again and it twisted and fell 20 feet from us!

We hiked out and I flew back to camp to report the incident to F&G and pick up my daughter to go back and skin the bear for F&G.

You are the first person I have told this story to as I haven't decided whether to write it up or not, or where, but thought you should know that your ammo WORKS. We recovered 4 of the bullets and I took a photo of the back of the bear after the hide was removed that shows an entry on one side of the back and the tip of the bullet on the off side ...

Back in the day I carried a 44 mag wheel gun. I wouldn't feel undergunned with a 10mm with jackhammer or hard cast bullets. There was a fella (Rooster something?) on TV filmed shooting big game including cape buffalo with one.

I dont handload for pistol either but the 10mm Jackhammer is tempting me. Ive been up close here with a few black bears over the years and none have bothered me but they can still get pretty big.
Lots of things can happen, bears have been taken down with 9mm but I think those odds are rare and nothing Im going to compromise on. I do think the 10 for me is a good compromise but if I hunted in grizzly country I might side with a heavier wheelgun I think.

Part of the reason I carry a S&W 629. Some times there is no replacement for displacement (old racing saying).
Thinking about 45 ACP+P or 44 mag loads with Hammers.

Anything is better than nothing when it comes to any kind of self defense. The 10mm gets a bit of unearned street cred from the likes of Razor Flobbs and his antics - don’t believe for one second he’s all legit. It’s not a .41 mag like is often claimed but it has defended and even taken much big game, to its credit.

Just shared this article on another forum and then stumbled across this post.
It’s a long article but I found it very interesting. I always try and share it when the Hand gun for bear defense discussions show up.

I’ve read that story too. One thing I would point out is if I was using my 10mm for bear defense I wouldn’t be carrying 175gr Hornady FlexLock.
