Hammer inspired Rifle Builds

I like the new format, but I'm missing a bit of the history. So I thought I would start a general thread to capture guns that Hammer Bullets inspired us to build. I'm deep down a big bore guy. As I pursued the Hammer Bullets, I just knew I had to have a rifle for the 404 458 diameter Power Hammer. I thought single feeding in one of my 45/70s would work. However after getting 25 of those beautiful bullets, I realized I was taking up too much powder space to get to my desired 2300 fps. So back to the drawing boards. One of my former hunting buddies, Craig, shot a 458 WinMag, but I didn't really want to go that route as I am left handed. A custom 458 WinMag was out of the question. So the search began. About the same time, Joe16 was on a different course but we both came up with the same solution, get a CVA Scout in 45/70 and bore it out to 45/90! So the gun was ordered. Joe16 sold me 30 45/90 brass as it was almost impossible to get. Dies were ordered! I realized that I wanted more of a muzzle brake, so I started searching. I found Haskins made a specific brake for the CVA, so I ordered one. The gun was off to the gunsmith before I ran even one 45/70 through it. I had a nice Vortex scope from another project that I abandoned. It all came together! So, the first shot was a muzzle velocity of 2284. That was a guess on where to start. Wow was I happy. I worked through some ladders with several different powders. I topped out at over 2,600 fps. I backed down to an accurate load that averaged 2304 fps. I hunted deer and elk with this gun this year. Never saw a critter to drill! One of those years! Spring Bear season starts in just over a month, and the 45/90 will be in the woods.

I had this rifle built specifically for the 123 gr Absolute Hammer, down to even talking with Steve's smith to run the specs by him for a custom reamer. It is a 6.5x47 Lapua, and to say the least, I am very impressed with how it shoots. It is not a speed demon, and it doesn't even really like to be pushed to the limit, but you put any load together with that bullet at 2900 fps, and it will put them all in the same hole, and do it with a very small velocity ES and SD. With 4 different loads, and 4 different powders, it gives me an ES of 7-8 fps and an SD of 3.3 fps like clockwork.

I haven't gotten to poke a hole in any critters with it yet, but that day will come soon enough.

Since it is a switch barrel, I am currently getting a 22 Creedmoor barrel spun up to shoot some 70 gr HHs in it.

I have had a few built with hammer bullets in mind. Most recent one was last year. It’s a 280 AI on a defiance, IBI CF at 23 long with a 1-7.5” twist, paradigm CF stock.

Thank You Rich! I did manage 2 shots. 1 sighter, and 1 antelope from the back of the UTV. Friends literally carried me to Wyoming. Hopeful this year, my Physical Therapist is interested in getting me out.

I think I have 92 rounds loaded. Might be enough to burn the barrel LOL!

THIS is my next goal in life!!!🤘

Browning XBolt Speed SR in 300WM 22" 1-8. I tweaked it with a carbon fiber/graphite McMillan game scout, and changed out the radial brake for a recoil hawg. I also swapped the gross "feather" trigger for a 2'ish lb. Timney trigger. Total weight is 7 1/4lbs. recoil is on par with my 257Bob or less. Plan on running all the things 160gr and under.

Didn't quite feel like digging them out tonight, but I will soon. Cartridges were handy, however.

Don't know why they posted upside down?

Left to right, 6.5 Sherman MAX (SAUM Imp), 30 Sherman Mag (300 PRC Imp) & 6.5-06 AI. All capable of 4k+ with Hammers. Last is 338 Sherman. That is my biggest thumper. Over 3k with 205 HHs.

Well, today is my day off - so of course the weather/wind is cruddy and no fishing 🤬.
So... I dug out 3 of my pets.

6.5 -06 AI, 26", 1:7.5, Brux on Rem 700 accurized, Stockys VG2
30 Sherman Mag, 26" Brux, 1:9", on accurized Rem 700, Shehane stock, soon to be Stockys VG2.

@slickyboyboo
What brand of carbon fiber barrel is on your 6.5 above?

@ButterBean
Your loaded 22-06AI doesn't appear to be crimped in a PDR valley per your normal routine. Is this the case and if so what is the reason?
Not criticizing just curious.

Thanks

The infamous .270 Win Thors Hammer was specifically built to shoot 156HH even though I never shot the bullet. I believed it would be special in 700LA to take advantage of the magazine max of 3.69". I sent 2 dummy rounds to Preferred Barrel to set jump at 0.010 which resulted in 0.290 freebore. Fast twist 1:8 with 5R. Light palma barrel contour. Rifle delivered incredible velocity and accuracy. First kill was my biggest WT 161 7/8! Its first rifle I take out of safe niw!
