Hammer inspired Rifle Builds

The infamous .270 Win Thors Hammer was specifically built to shoot 156HH even though I never shot the bullet. I believed it would be special in 700LA to take advantage of the magazine max of 3.69". I sent 2 dummy rounds to Preferred Barrel to set jump at 0.010 which resulted in 0.290 freebore. Fast twist 1:8 with 5R. Light palma barrel contour. Rifle delivered incredible velocity and accuracy. First kill was my biggest WT 161 7/8! Its first rifle I take out of safe niw!

Nice! I had two guys on a FB group tell me this was dangerous and should not be shot. But when I asked for their explanation, one deleted his posts, and the other just spewed some BS that he wasn’t there to teach me handloading basics, but never seemed to be able to give a logical answer. 🤣🤣🤣

I like the new format, but I'm missing a bit of the history. So I thought I would start a general thread to capture guns that Hammer Bullets inspired us to build. I'm deep down a big bore guy. As I pursued the Hammer Bullets, I just knew I had to have a rifle for the 404 458 diameter Power Hammer. I thought single feeding in one of my 45/70s would work. However after getting 25 of those beautiful bullets, I realized I was taking up too much powder space to get to my desired 2300 fps. So back to the drawing boards. One of my former hunting buddies, Craig, shot a 458 WinMag, but I didn't really want to go that route as I am left handed. A custom 458 WinMag was out of the question. So the search began. About the same time, Joe16 was on a different course but we both came up with the same solution, get a CVA Scout in 45/70 and bore it out to 45/90! So the gun was ordered. Joe16 sold me 30 45/90 brass as it was almost impossible to get. Dies were ordered! I realized that I wanted more of a muzzle brake, so I started searching. I found Haskins made a specific brake for the CVA, so I ordered one. The gun was off to the gunsmith before I ran even one 45/70 through it. I had a nice Vortex scope from another project that I abandoned. It all came together! So, the first shot was a muzzle velocity of 2284. That was a guess on where to start. Wow was I happy. I worked through some ladders with several different powders. I topped out at over 2,600 fps. I backed down to an accurate load that averaged 2304 fps. I hunted deer and elk with this gun this year. Never saw a critter to drill! One of those years! Spring Bear season starts in just over a month, and the 45/90 will be in the woods.

sweet looking gun!

While they rein us in a little, the owners are old time wildcatters and experimenters. They've indulged us with one of a kinds, and altering good existing designs to make them better for a specific purpose.

Enough of us in the group it can seem like the mainstream gets left out at times.

For the record a .30-06 is one I can't stand to not have in the safe.

But yeah I like Buzz Lightyears motto of to infinity and beyond!

For the record, my next build is 06 with26" and 1:9tw. Purposely built for 180HH. The 180HH is Stellar in 22" 700ADL @2875 fps. In 26" it will be "Interstellar"! I also bet 166HH will be awesome as well. I don't have my own 06 and feel that my safe is whining at me! You know, what the heck is wrong with you!

So another rifle build specifically for a Hammer.

I think a 30-06AI may be my next build. My 6.5 Sherman barrel is toast and needs a re barrel. I was planning on a 24” with a 9 twist. Those are impressive numbers you are getting with a 22” barrel!

W760 was magic which has always been good 06 powder. The 700LA with great magazine max COAL plus even std throat on 06 lets you set them out pretty far. This load is in the Hammer table. I am betting adding sufficient freebore for the 180HH will let it "breathe" properly and be darn potent! I like changing how a traditional cartridge to what it could be with right COAL and freebore. So far results prove it works exceptionally well.

Yeah adding to the throat definitely helps. Plus some cases see new performance with modem powders. I’d be building off a Borden Timberline with a Wyatt extended box. So I should be good for a long COAL.

Once you get past the marketing, use the same modern components, at similar pressures the old timers will hold their own against newcomers.
The real benefits are the availability of standard components! Which is why I went with .270 and gave it more room to "breathe"! I truly believe 06 will as well and lots of shooters have proven so. Serengeti chamber great example what a 06 heavy can do.

Will you be building a standard 30-06, or an improved version?
