Hello...and Help!

Hello from Oklahoma....This is my first post here, there will be more! My current obsession (I have a personality disorder) Is buying rifles and working up loads for all of the 30-06 based cartridges. I do not own a 30-06 but I do own a 25-06, 270Win, 280Rem, 338-06AI and a 358-06 (OK is a .35 Whelen). Right now I'm concentrating on the 338-06 and 35 Whelen working up to a African plains game hunt in August of this year. I have a couple of friends who have convinced me I'm an idiot for not using Hammer bullets so here I am. I have a few things in my cart but I'll ask a few more questions elsewhere on this forum before place my first order. I will say right now I'm leaning toward starting with the 213gr Hammer Hunter for my 338-06AI. Plains game from Springbok to Eland. Last time I went I had shots from 60-310 yards so thats what I'm expecting in August.

Welcome from NorCal!

I’m not much help at the moment, but will be wading into the 358-06 in the hopefully near future. Defenitely look at the accumulated data for the bullets you plan on trying an read the pinned threads on reloading/load development.
We may heckle each other, but we also share successes and failures so that all may be successful with Hammers.

I have a 338-06 AI but have only used the 175hh so far…but looking at the HH downloads I see two loads with the 338 Sherman which is almost the duplicate of the 338-06AI ( parent case is 270 I believe) see below
338 Sherman 213 HH F210, Varget, 62 grains 2843 fps in 26” barrel
213 HH, F210, Staball 6.5, 66.5 grains, 2800+ fps in 22” barrel
great info starting points, I would start lower on grains and work up!

Welcome from Central Florida. I'm waiting on my first 35 Whelen Barrel to be made. I too am going to sit back and watch this and hopefully Farleg will come along soon because I'm pretty sure he can give you the correct information, hammer-wise. Any bullet for that matter.

As far as your 270 goes, Muddyboots going to bore the hell out of you with his Thor's thingy🤣🤣🤣🤣. Actually you'll be in great hands he's got that cartridge down pat.

And just reading your first post, I bet Mountainman dropped his top plate😱

I fully embraced hammers when I came to find them. I subscribe to the light and fast side of the house. Speed kills!!

The following links can help you form an informed opinion Hammer bullet selection for your cartridges versus cup and core bullet understanding. As @OutdoorEdventure mentioned, the Safari hunts are great reads.

You start with 270 cases, then expand necks and fireform to 40 degree shoulder. That way you don't lose neck length in the forming process.
Edit to add: neck expansion is easiest done with powder charge and grits (COW) method. Too much expansion to go just with mandrels (for me). And yes, I lost a few pcs of brass in the process. Usually takes at least 2 COW firings to get that Big neck.

The Hammer website is very confusing....everything is "available, ready to ship" I never see that these days! :p It's dangerous I'm $436 in so far and have not tried the bullets yet lol!! That's with the Veterans discount which I greatly appriciate!!
